Who you are buying from.
We are a small textile trading company in Central Java. We buy hand-drawn batik from craft centres across Java and sell it to people who want to know what they are getting.
Why we do it this way
- Printed cloth with a batik motif gets sold as batik tulis constantly. The people doing it are often not lying on purpose, they bought it that way themselves and passed it on.
- The buyer who ends up holding it has no way to tell. On genuine batik the dye goes through, so the motif reads on both faces. On printed cloth the back is pale. That is checkable, and we would rather you check.
- So we record where each piece came from and how it was made, and we say plainly when something is cap rather than tulis. Cap is not inferior, it is a different process, and there is no reason to be vague about which one you are buying.
About our workshops
We buy from craft centres in Lasem, Pekalongan, Solo, Yogyakarta and Cirebon. We name the region on every piece and we do not name the workshop. That is deliberate. Sourcing relationships took years to build and publishing them is how you lose them.
